It's strange that they put the mechanics in a cube instead of a sphere outer form.

If it was a sphere, they couldn't demonstrate balance. All they could do is roll.

True, but it would be cooler to see a sphere do the stop on the incline demo than the pointy corner of a cube. The "walking" demo would also be more fluid.

The sphere couldn't stop on the incline. Since gravity never stops, you would need to constantly increase the motor speed to offset it (which is impossible). This thing can only work if it's possible to achieve balance.

Do you mean the point of the corner of the cube is stuck into the surface of the incline?

The corner of the cube would slide if steep enough, but it is just held there by balance and friction, like you standing on a slope with your feet.

Do you think the cube has more friction than a sphere, or because the cubes friction is on a smaller contact area?

The cube is in a state of balance, in theory a cube could balance on an incline like it is without any robotic assistance, like how you can almost balance a pencil on a table for a second. A sphere would always want to roll away, there is no balance to a round object like a ball.
