"Looks like Tiger beat me to the punch, part turned out nice" Yes I agree the part does look great

Re: "Delrin Acetal" ... Thanks again PP, I'll remember that ...

OUCH "$1,500" that HURT, LOL [IMG]

Yup I'm currently using, actually trying to use FreeCAD
... Another reason I'm having trouble with CAD or FreeCAD in particular is because I found it a little buggy.
... Although it's useable and regardless of my skill with CAD in general the manufacturer did warn it might have bugs !?!

As always, very nice work John.

haha, even the photo's themselves look good, my drawing make for a good background ... photographically speaking, yeah [IMG]

I just checked your part in FreeCAD and the .STL loaded just fine. I can send it to you if interested. Also I am running the part right now, here is the first minute of it:

The part finished out as I had hoped it would. I did not bother with the hole in it since there is no challenge to that, but the process lent itself well to produce a 3D part. This is the very first part from start to finish as a solid model that I have ever machined and completed. With the right YouTube videos you can accomplish anything I guess.

The top witness line is just color, no geometry change. I mis understood the drawing the first time I saw it and thought the part had angled sides on all four sides. Once I realized that two sides were straight it made things 100% easier to deal with. So the witness marks are just the .125" grab in the vise when I turned it over to face the vise hold off (just changed the color a bit under the squeeze).

Your part looks fantastic Tyson!  Are the angled sides just as they came out of the mill or did you touch them up?  Think you said you made 5mil passes so must have gone around about forty times to get that.  How much time in the CNC did it take?

That is exactly how it comes from the mill. The .005" step down is really rough actually (you can see the lines). I just wanted to get the part done. If I picked .001" step down it would be smooth as glass. It took 21 minutes to mill the top half at 30 IPM, 60 IPM would have probably worked just fine and maybe if you used a 4 flute EM you could go 100-120 IPM. I used a .250"D Niagara Ball End Mill (first time it ever came out of the box), but it is meant for aluminum.

Not sure what the pass distance was but seems like with rapids it was about 700+ inches. But the point of all this was to produce a solid 3D model and G code and run it. And it worked, this will really come in handy in the future for prototyping things with complex shapes.

Next time we meet I want to know how you get that brushed finish? It is very orthogonal, which is key for aesthetics.

I might not understand all the terminology but I can see good work when I see it ...

.005" could be polished and buffed if it needed to be smooth as glass but I see this as overkill. First time the locking mechanism clamped onto the part it would only scratch it. Besides when the part is in use there isn't much viewable to the eye anyway, looks great as it is ... LOL, the good news is I checked all my measurements again and there good ;)

More PICS of the Quick Release Setup, and of course I will post more when new arrives

Just out of curiosity PP why is black, did you paint it with some special coating?

W00d, no paint, that is machined out of Delrin Acetal black plastic. Also those pictures you just posted would have been a big help earlier in the game, I did not realize the edges were rounded over (Fillet) like that. I don't know what the radius would have been, so I just made some numbers up, probably a bit smaller than what the real part is (I picked .040"r) but it only took 30 seconds to make that drawing change and another minute to re-post the G code. So I turned the "waste" block over from my first attempt and am running a new part right now with rounded edges. I changed the step down to .003" and bumped the feed speed up to 50 inches per minute. There is 1,100 inches of travel with these new settings, but still runs in 20 minutes. Hopefully it will turn out nice....

Looks like I could have picked a larger radius, but came out nice anyway...

I thought about adding the rounded edges in my drawing but as they are only cosmetic and not needed for the part to function I decided not to include them ... Nevertheless the rounded edges does finish it off quite nice ....

"Delrin Acetal black plastic" ohhhh that's why it's black, I though it was made out of aluminum. do'h [IMG]

    I have a Tormach PCNC 1100 Series 1
(this image is of a Series 3, but they look the same, different electronics)

But no fancy stand or shelf, I made those myself. It does use flood coolant though.

wOOd - I do have CNC equipment, but you might be interested to know that your part was done 100% on a manual milling machine.  Making that part on a CNC wasn't unnecessary and doing it manually was easier than doing the programming.  I think Tyson only did it on the CNC because it was an opportunity to experiment with his 3D capability.  I saw his part a couple days ago and it looked really really nice!

Thanks guys, yup I was mostly interested in seeing what you guys have and not so much what machine made them.

Yes even the photo's of PP part looked good so it wouldn't be hard to imagine the actual thing would look nicer ;)
