In my experience with the vxl system, if you are running a 4x4 slash, and using 3s, no matter what you do to it, the vxl will fail. Mine would go into protect mood within 5 minutes of drive time, on pavement. After a fail of a beach trip with it, the vxl system virtually imploded on itself. Quite litterally, the smoke was let out of it. I switched to the castle 1415 sct combo, which is a 2400kv 4 pole motor, with the mmp esc with a fancy new green lable. With that setup, i was able to change my gearing around to 22/50 and then added a 4500mah 45c 4s to the mix. Speed runs of 80+mph with no further heat issues. Infact i had no issues with it other than keeping tires on it after that.

I would like to keep the waterproof stuff (servo/speed control),-but am less than confident about purchasing another Velineon 3500.-
...any suggestions on a motor I can use w/ the stock speed control?

As for motors you could run on the stock esc, im not really sure. But the mmp im using right now seems to be pretty stout. If u dont plan on. Submerging ur truck, a mmp would be alright for most weather driving situations

After my vxl system had all the smoke let out of it, i called traxxas, and they gave me three different run around stories about why it went tits up. I was like, you guys suck. I got ahold of castle the next day, and was on my way to stupid fast slashville. Ive been extremely happy with that setup. I now have the mmp in my ofna hyper 10sc with a tekin sc4x 7.5t sensored motor. And still, no problems what so ever.

the first VXL esc and motor were bad right out of the box-I was told to use a smaller pinion (like it might be my fault).Traxxas warrantied both, and let me know how much the next one would cost ($$ plus core), because the next one would be beyond their warranty period (30 days).
I'll call them today, they hooked me up on the first one=ya never know ???

Well my man, i wish you the best if you insist on staying with the vxl. I may suggest and strongly urge you to run it on 2s and 2s only. The vxl for what ever reason does not like 3s in the 4x4 slash. Weather it be the drive train, or just how they designed the whole car. Maybe the 3rd time will be the charm.

= I should have been from the "show me state"- I'll know I have a new motor when I see it.
The VXL may be going into a 2wd car when this is over= your point well taken, thank you.

I've worked on few slash 4wd.  Yes the electronics are not made well.  However,.most of the time failure occurs when rolling resistance is high.  Ex bad bearings, drive train inefficiency.  Weigh your truck.  I've found more than one truck had a few extra pounds from h2o in the tires/foam.

blt4speed-I got to admit ,picturing a few lbs of water in the tire foams did bring a smile to my face. Not the case on this one though , I keep it on a stand in my house, nice and dry. I had a bad bearing on one of the hubs when it was brand new, I  replaced it while waiting for the second VXL system. While the motor is out I'll check the rest= great advice, thank you.

That's great news.  I thought they would replace it for you.  Now all we need is some decent weather to run again.
