I only had to cut a few easier lines and peel off the black section. First coat of black done. I also am painting the wings and I forgot to peel the number plates and paint them black as well.
Okay, hang in there guys. The last peeling. Note: there are little flakes of paint coming off with the liquid mask and I had to wipe down the inside of the car thoroughly before I was ready to paint. And first coat of white done. I put about 4 coats of the black and blue on in order to get all the hard to spray spots. I have a feeling I am going to buy an airbrush soon to make this a lot easier and it should save on this expensive paint - 50$ in paint on this body =| Hopefully I can use some of it again.
It looks like we're going to see some window mask and over spray film removal today. I meant to ask you earlier: You chose to do the cut-out and trimming after painting. I know there are two schools of thought, trim before and trim after paint. What was your reasoning for trim after paint?
After thinking about the process it just seems easier to trim after the paint. This is my first paint job for a car so I am basically winging it with some instruction from youtube. Also the number plates are located in the wheel wells. Painting them after being cut out doesn't seem as easy as painting them with the rest of the body. Also I assume there would be imperfections along the edges if the body is cut out first, or at least more chance of imperfections. I sprayed another thick coat on last night before bed. If it looks good when I get home it will be time to pull the mask off the outside and start the cutting process.
Your paint job is looking better every day. Looking forward to seeing you peel off that protective film! When I did my OFNA Hyper 10SC rebuild (http://southernoregonrc.com/index.php?topic=90.0) I decided to cut out the body before painting. My reasoning was that I can better setup the body height and wheel clearances better when the body is still clear.
I peeled the film off the outside. There is some room for improvement. Plenty of small imperfections. I think next time a fresh hobby knife would help, mine was pretty dull. I am interested to see how much better the Bob Dively liquid mask is on the second body. I haven't started cutting the mask for it yet.
Thanks Smitty, It really isn't too hard. I mounted the body and took it for its first drive. I really felt for a while that I wouldn't run it, but I changed my mind once to took a couple laps. It makes me drive so cautiously that I end up driving a lot better..
And a small video of the second run. We ran at my house where the pics were taken in Gold Hill, I wish I had video of the battles my friend Eric and I had. (he is running a FT SC-10 as well) The sun falls behind the hills at around 3 at my house so we moved the race up to Eric's house, he lives up on the hill and has sun till 5:30. This is a video of his small backyard track, we changed the route later to a figure 8 so we were jumping up the step up and coming down the ramp. I like the figure 8 a lot better.
I just realized that it looks like you painted the number plates and wings but didn't mount them. Weren't they inside the wheel cut-outs on the un-cut body that you painted black?
You caught me, I need to paint the insides of number plates and wings before mounting them. Haven't quite got around to it.
