    QUOTE:

    10. "This is Unix, It's Easy"

In the film Jurassic Park, a 12-year-old girl has to use the park's security system to keep everyone from being eaten by dinosaurs. She walks up to the control terminal and utters the immortal words, "This is a Unix system. I know this." And proceeds to (temporarily) save the day.

Leaving aside the plausibility of a 12-year-old knowing Unix, simply knowing Unix is not enough to immediately use any application running on the system. Yes, she could probably have used vi on the security terminal. But the specialized security system would have required some learning time — significant learning time if it were built on Unix, which has notoriously inconsistent user interface design and thus makes it harder to transfer skills from one application to the next.

You and I are old enough that we remember DOS (IBM PC and MS) and may have worked extensively with it (I know I did).  If you learned anything at all about command line computing back then you are (were) already a leg up on UNIX/LINUX.  In a perfect world we would not have been subjected to DOS at all and gone straight to UNIX (Linux came later) and the world would be a better place.

Do you know how many supercomputers in the world top 500 supercomputers run a MS OS?  One.

    Source:
    http://i.top500.org/stats

How many cell/mobile phones run a MS OS?
How many mission critical computers run a MS OS?

You may have heard of the London stock exchange crash when they ran a MS OS.  They changed.

A couple quotes from the above ZDNet source article:

I know a lot of companies and people run a MS OS but that was just a poor choice they made a while back and they are too lazy to change.

Real computers, and cell/mobile phones run UNIX/LINUX.

OK, no more coffee for me.  ;)

IOS is derived from OS/X which is derived from BSD and NeXTSTEP.  NeXTSTEP came from NeXT which was the company Steve Jobs formed when he left Apple in 1985.

I had the opportunity to see a demo of a NeXT Cube in 1989.  You wish your Windows 7 computer could do some of the things that the NeXT Cube computer did in 1988.

Actually I was referring to GPS's quote, literally, "Isn't anti-virus for those poor souls who still use Microsoft stuff?"
I guess as a Windows user I should have a little tougher hide.  :)

Here is a pretty good read:

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/10/06/linux_vs_windows_viruses/

A couple of my favorite quotes from the article:

Regarding the Mac comparison:  I am not a Mac user, but have used Macs as my main machine in my day to day work.  They are certainly a magnitude better security wise than any MS based machines and I'm sure we could Google some statistics to back up that claim.

I read this week that Apple computers are the highest selling computers in America for the first time.  I think this is a good thing.  For years I've been saying that if Apple would release their OS/X operating system so that it ran on commodity Intel PC hardware instead of their own proprietary (and expensive) hardware they would crush Microsoft.  On the other hand that Apple proprietary (and expensive) hardware is part of the reason that Apple stuff is so darn good.

Years ago (10?) I always advocated Microsoft systems and I eked out a decent living consulting to small and mid-sized companies who ran those systems.  Today if anyone asks me what computer to get I would recommend anything with a Linux system on it.  But if they have some money to spend I would suggest a Apple computer.  Both are just better in so many ways.  One of the things I appreciate with any of the Linux distributions is all the high quality free software available.

In the end we are all Linux users anyway.  All of us, even you Microsoft guys, because that's what runs all the great services we use everyday on the Internet.

    Cowabunga!

    !!! Thread-JACK !!!

[IMG]  LMAO, Never fails ... can't have a gaggle of Linux/Unix Fanboys "discussing" without Apple's "Quarterly" figures getting
their 2¢ in someplace. And ever notice ONLY Apple feels the need to be disparaging in their advertising. LOL, there's a TAG-Line
for ya Mr. Mac "Only Apple feels the need" or "FEEL teh NEED"

[IMG]  Thread "was" about "Interoperability" Sorry but I have to wonder, DID anyone actually read the LINKS? I think not
...  Again if ya know a little about WED design, although it's not a prerequisite it's pretty FUNNY reading  ;) Least we should have
one thread that actually talks about what was brought up !!

Sorry wOOd, I did interrupt the flow of your discussion.  :-[

GPS and my son seem to be like minded about Microsoft stuff.
It just seemed he wasn't using quite a broad enough brush with is comment.
I get this at home too.  ;D

Carry on, I'll keep my thoughts to my self.  ;)

Was in a crap mood and that was my first post so I wasn't really reading the posts. But this shouldn't be an excuse, it's not really that BIG of a deal. Discuss away and my apologies to everyone, never mind my crap mood ;)

Same here.  Don't get me started on a Linux/Mac/Windows discussion before I've had my Java, or after I've had too much.  ;)
