Anyone else out there running custom sandrails?????
Still working out the suspension and drive train. Both running brushless systems, one a Velineon VXL-3S, the other a Mamba Max Pro. Haven't completed either rail yet, but looking around to see if anyone else is into it...

I am for sure. Unfortunately mine is still just a pile of tubing and spare parts. Maybe knowing someone else around here has some I might be more inclined to get mine together. You have some more pics and info on your pair? I build a formula oddroad bug this past year and had a blast over at the dunes with it though

Both mine are made from 1/4" steel rod. Very solid, but quite heavy also. That's why I'm having difficulty working out the suspension (how to dampen that much weight and still rocket over the dunes...). I'm going to finish these and make sure they're good drivers, then I'm going to design a 1/5 scale all aluminum chassis monster rail. But, first and foremost I am a plane nut. So most of my time and money has been going to that end of the hobby. But like you said, knowing someone else out there is doing the same thing will definitely motivate me :)

How about dual shocks at the rear? You could run a single standard shock with a heavy spring and a second spring less with heavy fluid. I have used this a few times where weight was an issue but the customer still wanted to jump it super high. If you look close in this pic you can see what im talking about. This beast weighted in close to 9lbs with a brushless and a 2spd summit tranny. He flings this thing so high in the air it makes me cringe but the suspension has always soaked it up and taken the abuse

Very nice! I'm kind of limited on mounting options as the frames are already powder-coated with only single-shock mounts front and rear. I'll definitely keep that in mind for the 1/5 scale build.

OK, I couldn't stand it any longer
I ordered some 5/16" solid aluminum rod from work to start the new 1/5 scale sand monster ;D
(I haven't even gotten my first two rails completed yet!)

Do you solder or weld that aluminum rod?

Pile, I'm afraid I'm not too knowledgable when it comes to cars/buggies. These are my first two and I still haven't gotten them finished ??? If you'll start a new thread in the off road section there are a lot more people that know what they're doing than I do :) Sorry, wish I could be more help 8) Welcome to the forum BTW!

A few additions to my off-road colection...
1/16 E-Revo VXL - insanely fast with just two stock batteries in series!!
1/10 Slash 2WD - currently brushed, but I've got another VXL setup to go in it!!
1/10 Duratrax Evader EXT - currently just a roller, but I'm putting the drive setup from the Slash into it to get it running for now. :D :D :D

Pics and specs coming soon 8)

I'm thinking about 12mm hub extenders , and that baja body.to help keep the sand/ dirt out.

Hub extenders? I hadn't thought of that. Great tip, thanks! I already have a body on order - Manx style dune buggy ( I used to have one). I need to find some rear wheels for the paddles to match the front ones I already have.

Met up with GPS and Pile of Toys down at the school on Harbeck today. Great fun for a short while :-\ Put my Velineon system into my Slash, drove it around awhile (wicked fast!), then sent it full speed (sideways) into a curb and broke a front shock, front shock tower, front steering knuckle, and rear hub carrier. Oh well, parts are on order ;) GPS' Ofna is way cool 8) Built like a tank and drives like its on rails! Thank goodness I get to go relax tomorrow and fly my planes :D Oh wait, still gotta fix the F-18, set the CG on the Slo-Stik, and charge my batteries  Not going to sleep for awhile I guess ::)

It was a pleasure meeting you guys today.  I agree with Pile of Toys: everyone I've met from the forums has been great.  We are fortunate to have so many cool folks on here.
