Here are some links I generally give to people that see my quadrotor and are interested in getting more information. These links should be helpful to anyone thinking of building one or just seeing what it's all about. This is a link to the OSU Engineering site where I post new quadrotor links. There are over 70 entries there now! http://prototalk.net/forums/showthread.php?t=174 Here is an especially good link for anyone thinking of scratch building a quad. The thread was started by one of my friends at Parallax when he decided to build his first quad. It's an ongoing source of good tips and information. http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?133372-Ken-s-QuadCopter-Build-Log-%28now-includes-videos%29 Here are some vendor sites of interest: http://www.openpilot.org/ http://www.kkmulticopter.kr/ http://www.hoverflytech.com/ http://diydrones.com/ This is the start of my own quad project site: http://QuadRotorFun.com/ Note that my quad is tiny. It's about 4-1/2" between motors! It uses the HobbyKing clone of the KK controller board. The price of the HK board recently dropped to just $23. Here is a link to that: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=17537 This is a basic 3DOF board, but it still works really well for what it is and I think it's a good way to get started on a budget. You can always upgrade to a more sophisticated controller once you're flying. ...Tiger
I've been reading Ken's blog at Parallax and it's interesting for sure. I think the HoverFly Sport is no longer available though.
You can still get the Sport. Parallax has them on order from HoverFly and will have them in stock within a week. There is more to the Sport story, but I can't post it on here. Be assured that they will continue to be available. ...Tiger
The HobbyKing board that I mentioned in my first post has just been replaced by a revised board with larger processor (more memory). With the new processor it is now compatible with all of the latest software from the KK site! Best part is that they only increased the price by 80 cents. Wow! Here is the new link: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=19534 ...Tiger
The Pro has a LOT more features! For the beast you're building, I'd want to use the Pro. The Sport is nice, but it doesn't even have accelerometers. I'd rather have an OpenPilot than a Sport for half the money. All that said, you definitely will be able to get the Sport if you want one.
I got a reply from Stacey at HoverFly that they received my inquiry and are looking into it. They are busy as they are releasing the GPS board this week. I am looking forward to their reply.
