I agree. I wouldn't mind trying one out. The only bad part of their project is that their ground control station runs on windows.
Ha, well thats not bad to me but the GCS uses the Mavlink protocol. And is available on Android, Iphone, soon to be Ipad, and I think I saw Linux somewhere.
I know they are doing some great stuff with Android so if they port the GCS to Linux natively without the need for Wine that would be a great thing. It's hard for me to take community projects seriously when they run on windows.
The difference is that that Wine is good for you in moderate amounts whereas Wine is not good for computing because you are still using windows applications.
John - I had never heard of wine until you linked it here. Have you tried it? What can you tell me about it? Sounds like you don't like it. If so, why is that? Sure sounds interesting to me. ...Tiger
Wine has been around a long time and I used to use it when the selection of certain application types for Linux was limited which is no longer the case. In my mind it filled a gap that doesn't really exist any longer. The reason I don't really care for it is because of what is does, allow one to run windows applications on Linux which is just plain wrong. Good applications will be coded for Linux, or Mac OS X, natively. There are a few die hards that haven't migrated their apps to Linux but even Adobe has admitted that windows is on the way out by making their latest versions "cloud applications" which makes them platform independent without coding for the various formats that are gaining popularity like IOS and Android Tablets and mobile phones. All you need is a browser. We'll have to wait and see if this works out for them and the grumbling has already started with regard to that. On the other hand if you want to run Linux (and you should) but just have to have some windows app then by all means go for it with Wine. It's free so how can you go wrong? BTW: Wine is the free edition of Crossover. Crossover has better application support and you can get customer service if you need it. You can learn more about Crossover here. You can also lookup the windows software compatibility here.
