Just got an email from my friend Ken at Parallax.  He just finished his new quad.  I'm attaching his comments and a few pictures.  I don't think it looks as big as it is, but I'm sure it's impressive when it's hovering over you!  Here is a snip from his email:

"I finished the super big ELEV-8 - 48" across for the flight envelope, and
36" rotor to rotor. This thing is a real beast and flies really nicely!
Indeed, it's a bit of a terror to put in the sky for fear of something
going wrong. I've been flying it all through this snowstorm with a bag
over the electronics. The sounds are really unique - it's a massive,
whining buzzard. When it starts up people naturally move back about ten
feet. There's really something kinda unnerving about watching it. Maybe
the 14" propellers and the sound of the motors and their raw power.

Flight times are about 12 minutes. I think I should be able to fly it over
FPV from my home all the way to the top of Scott Peak and back. I need to
order the goggles this weekend since I still don't have a set.

There's a nice power distribution board on top, too. 18V, 12V and 5V with
    plenty of current sourcing ability.

I think I might build a bigger one now. I'd like to turn some 18"
    propellers. "

I'm impressed with the 14" wood props, and no visible signs of needing to be balanced.

The photo out in the snow is cool, is that from the Southern Oregon area?

Ken lives somewhere in the sticks just outside Reno.  He comes here to GP to visit and raft the river once in a while so I expect we'll get to see this fly here one day.
