On Novak's website I saw they are coming out with a new 1/8 scale motor and ESC. It looks like the motor will be available in two lengths like a larger version of 540 and 550 motors.  The also mention a new ESC but no details yet.

So the question is what would you use in a 1/8 scale SC truck?

Hands down an MMM in any SC truck unless you can find something in the 550 can 3000kv or lower field which is a bear.  This is also comes true if we are talking about racing sc trucks.  There's a big difference between a slash 4x4 and a hoboa 10sc.

BTW.  Novak is junk in the off-road community as a majority, nothing from them last for any amount of time, they used to be a great company on the leading edge, lately they have fallen behind badly and still haven't even caught up to the cheap stuff.

Is MMM Mamba Monster Max? Castle Creations makes so many versions nowadays and the names are almost the same.
I have three or four Castle Creations motor and ESC combos and they are pretty nice. Some time back a guy at the RPM track let me drive his SC truck with a Novak "Sensored" system and I was impressed with the smoothness so I decided to give Novak's Havok Pro and 4.5 550 motor combo a try when they came out last year. I think I am liking it better for the way I drive. I get a good run time with 8000 2S LiPos and my motor and ESC stay so cool I never even mounted the included ESC fan. I never even made vent holes in the body that are so popular now to prevent parachuting so it gets warm under the body on really hot days.

I also use a Novak sensored brushless system on my Axial AX10, I think it's a Goat 3S with 21.5 turn Ballistic motor.

I have a SC8e that I was planning to go with a Tekin RX8 sensored brushless system on but after seeing that Novak 1/8 system I was thinking to wait a bit. Nothing against the Tekin, I have heard good things about them.

So far I cannot complain about the Novak quality from my personal experience but I am not a racer so our experiences certainly differ.

On my helicopters I use only Castle Creations ICE motor controllers and I don't think there is a better product for the money. If my disposable toy money was more I would try a Kontronik on a helicopter because I've heard and read good things about them.

You are correct in that MMM is a Mamba monster system, I have so much novak crud laying around that it makes me sick thinking about the money I've wasted, as per smoothness with out of the box performance a sensored system will do better hands down BUT a correctly tuned sensorless system will perform just as well.  I had numerous guys at the track run my velineon powered 2wd short course (including Jason the guy who I believe let you run his at rpm) and they all attested to it being nearly as smooth as any sensored system.  Tuning is key.  That being said I do run a mongoose system in my crawler as when we are talking about VERY slow speed operation no amount of tuning can come close to a sensored system.  As for Tekin, again RUN!  There version 5! (that's alot of version's for a new product) is better and not catching fire as much as it originally did, but there is still a lot of bad reviews about them.  I would stick with castle, buy the castle link and tune it.

You are correct in what your looking at and definatley what I would recommend, but that is a ton of dough!  You can buy a complete MMM system motor and esc for under $300.

    Another question:
Why did Associated use the Mamba Max Pro ESC instead of the Mamba Monster ESC in their SC8e RTR?  I think the motor in the RTR is the same 2200 Kv.

Yes you are correct that is the kit, and also it can be had cheaper than at a-main hobbies.  Also the mamba max pro and monster are the same controller in essence.

Is Jason still into RC?  What about Robert who worked at RPM just before they closed?  You mentioned Chad, he was the owner of RPM.  Did he quit RC?

    [/quote]

Yes Jason is very active and just bought my old race truggy to compete with next year.  Rob I have not talked to since the falling out of RPM hobbies.  Chad is the owner of RPM hobbies and still races and he is the host of the private track in jacksonville.

I saw that link on Castle Creations website and when I click the 1500 size I arrive here:
    http://www.castlecreations.com/products/neu-castle_motors.html

    The Neu-Castle 1518 1Y 1800kv, Neu-Castle 1520 1Y 1600kv, Neu-Castle 1717 1580kv are all marked as no longer available.

I thought your Truggy was nitro?  Wasn't Jason only into electrics?  When you say private track is it on someones private (home) property?

They have discontinued many of there motors for the more favorable "finned" can design and there site is kind of under construction at the moment.  Jason is basically only into nitro with a few limited electrics that his son races, yes my truggy is nitro as are all spec truggies.  Electrics just can't make a 30-60min main event yet.  Chad has built his own track on his own private property that he holds private races at.
