I just picked up an e revo brushed edition. Its very clean, to me at least, and I was wondering if the stock brushed motors are any fun whatsoever (as I have a mmm brushless e revo)? I have ran it on two nimh batteries, one 6 cell and one 7 cell. I'm sure one of the batteries is mostly toast as the run time is only 15 minutes tops. Suggestions anybody? Would going lipo make it any more fun? Or is it any better than two 7 cell nimh,? Also I may post the motors and esc in the for sale section to upgrade to brushless. I appreciate ANY and ALL feedback positive or negative. Thanks all!!!
Hi there Im new here but figured id offer my input. I have a mini brushless erevo and I was using 2 6 cell Nimh batteries both with a serial and parallel connectors and its fast and very powerful, I had a lipo laying around for my airplane I decided to throw in in the revo one day and man it made a big difference, at what was full speed with the 2 nimh in serial mode I can hit full throttle and it will almost flip over so im a firm believer in lipo power. it was a 3 cell 25c 1200mah by "zippy" I think. the airplane is brushed and it makes a big difference there too. I believe the battery is going bad too its all puffed up. Anyway hope this helps your decision
I also have a 1/16th scale eRevo brushless edition and my experience is also that running LiPo batteries makes it wicked fast. Sometimes too fast if that's possible. I did overheat my motor a few times so much that I shut down the ESC but that was my fault for not changing the pinion gear. I mostly ran mine in parallel so I could get longer run times. Once I forgot to switch the ESC to LiPo mode and puffed a LiPo so much I could not get it out of the little battery compartment so you may want to watch for that. I also got mine completely submerged in water once when I lost control at the South Middle school on Harbeck and ended up in that corner where the sprinkler seems to always flood into a deep puddle. The only damage was the LiPo battery that seemed to melt after I removed it from the car in a strange "Dali-esque" manner. I did not have any trouble with the ESC or motor though so that was cool. Hey...water cooled!
Haha nice. I have the vxl version and I love that little rc its all stock and I bash it all the time in over a year the only thing ive broke(knock on wood) is one of the control arms is cracked very durable. How do you switch the ESC to Lipo mode? I did manage do over discharge that lipo that day now it wont charge correctly. I tried charging it with my Nimh charger and monitor it really close I can get it back to fully charged but my LiPo charger still wont charge it even if I go run the battery for a minute or so
I broke a couple suspension control arms then I switched to the RPM parts which seem softer but don't break as easily. Do you have a separate balancer? I had a battery with one out of whack cell and after charging it in NiMh mode a while then balancing it my LiPo charger was happy again. There is a section in the manual about the VXL low voltage protection which is what you need for LiPo. I found this on the Traxxas website: How to Tell if Low Voltage Detection is ON How to Turn Low Voltage Detection ON
Cool that is good to know. I do have a balance charger (I believe anyway) its a eflight lipo charger just a little cheap thing but it worked good till I over discharged it. For now I dont have to worry about it I left the lipo in my car all day I went out there and it was really fat so I had the bright idea to pop it lol needless to say I had a huge fireball in the floorboard of my car haha luckily nothing except the battery was damaged and I learned why puffy Lipos are bad. Anyone got a cheap lipo for sale? haha
I can't speak for what the folks here may have available, but I've been having good luck with the "Gens Ace" brand from Hobby Partz (link) and the "Turnigy Nano-Tech" from Hobby King - when they aren't completely destroyed in shipping. I've never had any problems with Hobby Partz but if you order from Hobby King make sure you are ordering from their USA warehouse. I've had plenty of problems ordering from Hobby King and their customer support is absolute crap, the worst I've ever experienced from any online hobby shop.
Good to know, I was thinking about just getting something from ebay. do you know if you can run 2 Lipo's in a parallel configuration like the Nimh batteries?
Yes you can run 2 2S (7.4 volt) LiPos in parallel. The VXL-3m can handle up to 3S LiPo (11.1 volt). You could even run two 3S LiPos in parallel if you wanted, just not in series. This is from the Traxxas website (http://traxxas.com/products/parts/escs/vxl3m):
Nice. Yea the one that I blew up was a 3 cell at 11.1v. I have my revo 3.3 up for sale but no bites so far I guess no one wants nitro anymore. You still have your mini revo?
Yes, I still have my mini eRevo. It's a blast but I haven't run it for a while. I had set it up with some touring car foam carpet tires to do some speed runs and drag racing on 3S LiPo. That was fun but the tire foam chunked a lot running on the asphalt. The car also looks really funny with those small foam wheels. Actually I haven't run much surface stuff for a while since I started flying. This summer I only went out once so far. When I do get out though I always enjoy it and wonder why I don't go more often.
Im just getting into flying I got me a trainer im trying to figure out thats where I got the lipo from. I do have a blade msr also but for some reason it decided to quit working on me. You in GP? maybe we will have to get together sometime and do some bashing I go down there all the time ive got family down there
I am in Grants Pass. I am planning to go out again to the South Middle school on Harbeck this month, probably a Sunday will be best for me. I like to drive there because the parking lot is awesome and you can run a big triangle oval. There is even an embankment you can stand on to get a better overview. If I figure out a date I'll post it in the event calendar. I want to run some 1/10 scale touring car and my 1/8th scale OFNA GTP-2e over there. For local off road bashing I like to go to the B Street Jumps but I haven't been there at all this year.
Cool well maybe when I head to gp next ill let you know and maybe we can get together. I will probably run my mini revo I only have it and the big one well I do have a rustler too but it needs some parts
Sure, let me know when you can come down. My mini eRevo should be running, I'll check it out. Do you have any touring cars? I've got a Team Associated 1/18th scale and a 1/10th scale XRay T3.
I don't, I've only got 3 surface RC's at the moment my mini revo a full size revo 3.3 and a rustler that needs work.
I've really been wanting a Mini Revo, so I couldn't help but read up on this discussion. Anyway, I found some links that may help you with that Rustler . . or may not. I love my Rustler, I just got a new brushed motor for it. I have the next two days off, so I'm looking forward to tinkering with it. =) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Traxxas-443...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4859bcce19 RUSTLER PARTS LOT http://www.ebay.com/itm/Traxxas-Rus...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ac903f1cb ANOTHER RUSTLER PARTS LOT These are just a couple spots I found for your busted Rustler. As for the aforementioned dead mSR or the Rustler, I probably have the parts. Let me know what you're needing or check out my ebay store http://stores.ebay.com/Next-Level-RC-Pro . I have way more parts in stock then is shown in the store though.
Cool. Ive had my rustler for around 10 years now I just changed the rear end on it and I just got a 550 12 turn motor I got the esc also but I need that for another project so it should be up and running soon. I did put it all together today and run it a little with my mini revo batteries it did pretty good so if anyone has a good cheap esc I may want to buy it o and maybe a battery or 2
I'm under the impression that to run a 12 turn in the Rustler you would need a higher amperage ESC than the XL-5. I recently picked up a Reedy Radon 30,000 rpm 17 turn 540 for mine. I have the next two days off so I will be testing this fella out. knightrider81 mentioned in another thread that he may have another one of these motors. Then you could run the tried and true XL-5, which is easy to find. I'll let ya know how it runs here in the next couple days. -Derek
Well the motor and esc came together saposably out of a rustler but who knows really. Im hopping it will be somewhat powerful its going to power a small power wheels for my daughter she is almost 1 and im making her power wheels into RC for her first bday then when she is older she can drive it herself. I was reading up on it and there was a guy using the XL-3 for a full size power wheels f150 so I figured the XL-5 should be plenty to run it unless the XL-3 was more powerful than the XL-5
