Depends on what you got, but I had to use:

    http://www.malwarebytes.org

once to get rid of something specific. The free trial version did the job.

LOVE GPS' reply! I agree with Pelagic Pilot and also use SpyBot Search and Destroy, SuperAntiSpyware, then Malwarebytes - in that order. I've been a computer tech most of my life and can honestly say that combination does the trick for all but the most stubborn of infections. If all else fails, get out your O/S disc and wipe & reload ;)

I agree with this. I haven't (personally) used Windows in a bunch of years but when I had issues I used SpyBot Search & Destroy followed by Malwarebytes. Now I just use Linux. 8)

Curious, after the fact I've read three different articles complaining about the software that installed the adware and all of them where running Linux. And it was a Linux forum that recommended the software ... So ...

I don't quite understand.  Do you mean that a Linux host was used to distribute the malware software over the Internet?  What servers on the Internet aren't running Linux?  I was under the impression you got infected with something and I know you don't run Linux.

    LMAO, NO PRON ...

I downloaded a photo-editor which was supposed to be a re-worked version of GIMP which promised the look and feel of Photoshop. The program loaded with malware (some you choose, some, no choice) is called GIMPSHOP! However the version with the malware wasn't the original version of GIMPSHOP. The malware versions and it's creator created a clone-site of the original and it was this clone-site which suckered me into downloading the BS.

Obviously THIS is ONE to avoid!

Avoid the original also, according to it's developer even his version of GIMPSHOP was built around an older version of GIMP. Also he say's teh original GIMPSHOP is no longer being updated because of what this CLONE-SITE-Site NAZI did!

Of course I found ALL this after the fact thus the position I find myself
... My sources recommend GIMP and be DONE with GIMPSHOP, both, the original and mutilated versions!

hehe, sorry, what I should have said, the sources of information I found talked about the malware within GIMPSHOP and their systems we're running Linux. The version of GIMPSHOP that infested their systems was written for the Linux platform.

Teh Choice: I had found Malwarebytes (Good call Gents) that is supposed to best at cleaning a system already infested.
Anyhowz ... after running Malwarebytes I can say the issue is (maybe, hopefully, should be) behind me, solved ...
Although I have filed this thread for future reference in the off chance Malwarebytes doesn't do a complete J.o.B  ;)

Malwarebytes screen shot showing the damage!
