HK asked KK about this frame and he said... http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=34664&PN=1
How about that! On one hand I am for the simplicity of having the only moving parts being the motors. But having variable pitch blades on each motor does bring some interesting possibilities.
Looks like the project is coming along very nicely. I tried to post in the thread but apparently you have to be one of Ben's close co-horts to do so. A little disappointing to say the least. I also tried to PM him but got the same "You do not have permission to..." message. I was going to suggest they arrange the arms like the TBS Discovery as most people will be interested in flying with a camera - oh well. Nice concept and design so far. Still much to iron out IMO. Seems many of the people posting in the thread are heli guys as they just won't drop the "use a torque tube" idea. Also, they have changed to a standard motor/gearbox/heli tail rotor setup versus the hollow-shaft motor/direct drive approach. Sure, this opens up the path to more motor choices, but at a cost of WAY more moving parts (i.e. broken parts). I like their first design WAY more, but again, I can't post that in their thread Guess I'll just have to wait for the final release and decide then if I want one. Meanwhile here are a couple pics of their design... First concept - Hollow shaft motors with direct drive Second and current concept - std motors with gearbox and heli tail rotor configuration
Looks like they are going to end up over complicating this until it has more moving parts than a helicopter. Fail.
