Was recently reading this article that suggested flying a camera up in a balloon, specifically a weather balloon. You might even remember the video I posted of the family who flew their balloon into 'near' outer space. But one really cheap way to do AP was the guy the sent up his key-chain cam with a kite ... this would be great to try with the kids eh ...

Note: The first 'read' is 'dated' and from a time before 'multi-rotor' platforms became so popular, thus you won't see them listed as an 'option' ...

HeHe, here's the result from my idea of 'Ghetto' Aerial Photography.
... Disclaimer: NO 'QUADS' we're harmed in the making of these shots [IMG]

EDIT: Often missing from our aerial photography, stills and more so for our videos is the images story, what's it's story!?! And the 'story' behind this EDIT while it evolves is not so much a rant about aerial photography per say as it is about the actual content of our photography in general. Which is often lacking or at the least requires the 'story' being described and this is especially true if the 'story' is not immediately obvious. To make our stills and videos more interesting they NEED a story if not an interesting story!

When doing my photography and self critiquing the result
... I ask myself "What's my Story?" or "what is my photography saying"
... If the story is a good one, then I will show it off but if not then my image(s) get nixed!

Example: To simply pique interest I titled this next shot "People, don't NOTICE their surroundings!"

Normally the following might be seen as a boring photo and it probably would be if the 'story' was only about 'two people talking in the park'
... However what makes this 'story' interesting and even funny (IMO) are the two people and the two garbage cans

Do you see it,  the HINT --->
• Person #1 <-> Garbage Can <-> both  <-> Black
• Person #2 <-> Garbage Can <-> both  <-> Blue
Equals a 'FUNNY' relationship ... as the 'Story' goes ;)
... Interesting those two should meet at that particular spot to have their talk
... and the 'two' are even standing next to their 'correct' can

A good photo shouldn't need the 'story' explained as I have done, does the photo stand on it's own?
... My question for my audience, did I need to tell the 'story' or did the photo do the 'story' telling?
... If the latter, then that would make it a better photo

Also the 'technical quality' of an image is also inconsequential to a given story ...
... This simply means without a 'story' an image would be nothing more than a well focused image of nothing!

EDIT: So what's so darn interesting about this photo, an image of an apartment block!?!
... Well nothing really except it's where I live, and if we click on the photo we can see the crap original it came from.
... What we see is the magic of Image Editing!
... Well I say "CRAP" because it was NOT only a BAD photo (out of the camera) it was also a CRAP DAY due to the foggy weather.
... Normally I would have simply tossed a crap PIC like this but I wanted to see if I could FIX it, I thought it came out pretty good?

EDIT:

Local trivia: The Smoke Stack (Powerhouse) and Roof Tops peeking out above the tree tops are part of the old Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital (history). The old hospital was originally known as the Mimico Branch Asylum, Mimico Hospital for the Insane which is in the western part of the village of Mimico (as it was called at the time) which later became the part of town known as New Toronto. New Toronto became part of the Borough (and later, in 1984, City) of Etobicoke which was merged into the new City of Toronto (part of the Greater Toronto Area) in 1998.
                          Street and Aerial views:

Construction of the asylum started in 1888 and was completed in 1889. The hospital opened on January 21, 1889 and closed down on September 1, 1979.

At the time of the hospitals closing the institution was seen as "an antiquated relic of Canada’s Victorian past" which was inspired by the prevailing trend of deinstitutionalization. Deinstitutionalization was an idea born out of the thinking mental health patients would be 'better' living in the community as opposed to being committed to an institution.

Those decisions we're not without political controversy as many believed it was simply another attempt by 'government' at cutting costs. History shows us the hospital's
patients became victims of this controversy as it was for patients of many psychiatric hospitals within Canada many became homeless without the means to adequately look after themselves both physically and mentally. However the more most severely ill were institutionalized in the newly constructed Queen Street Mental Health Center.

On the somewhat lighter side are the hauntings. In the years after the closing of the institution there have been a number of ridiculous rumors and some outlandish urban legends surrounding the old hospital. Many of the present staff and students who now occupy the former hospital, claim are visited on a regular basis by ghostly appearances ... The place is Haunted! More here, Haunted or Not? Although this story by the Toronto SUN talking about the 'horrors' at the asylum is reviling as the story is poorly researched and generally misinformed. Clearly a page taken from the popular movie 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

The old institution current status: Active - Reused as Humber College South Campus

My latest, photo-edited, more aerial shots, kinda ....
... This time I'm trying to get away from my 'product' photography, shots of my heli's and parts.
... Shots are more ART rather than an accurate record or photo ...

Don't be afraid to say what you don't like
... w/ constructive criticism is the way to get better, it's always best IMO ;)

Thanks ...

The lighter shot was taken w/my Sony Cybershot DSC-H9 and it's macro function.
... Basically I kept shooting as the cam will shoot about 3 frames per sec while at the same time lighting the lighter
... Then I simply picked the best out of a batch of 10, yup the 'sparks' are real ...

EDIT: Flicking the Lighter to create the sparks, NO flame this time
