dpreview also are looking at this camera, here's there Pre-view, more like a summery ...

Next is their more detailed 'Pre-View' of this 'Canon EOS M' although they are NOT finished but are adding to it as they go ... As always with dpreview when they say 'complete review' they literal mean 'complete' as they will look at EVERY little detail of a given camera and/or accessory which covers near 10 pages or more, there up to 6 pages at the time of this posting ...

It is kinda COOL what Canon does with their "sit-back and wait'n see" approach, then BEAT the CRAP out em when they finally bring out theirs. Is JUST brilliant IMO. Although they have to get the timing right as they risk missing the window ... Well time will tell

Hey w00d, what do you think (your opinion) of this Canon EOS M camera compared to the Sony Nex cameras?

Actually there's not allot that can be said until this 'Canon' finally released to the public at large. The Review stops short of the actual test photo's so there's nothing that can be said there but to talk about the camera's rich feature set

As for picture quality, I would guess you and I would be hard pressed to see a difference between the two camera's. These dayz it should be dead simple to choose based on the image alone. With all things being equal, I mean equal in sensor sensor size you and I are not going to see any difference between the two, both should take GREAT pics! Leave that nonsense to the 'pixel peekers' ...

So that leaves us with the vast array of features that will be our deciding factor. Now here I can only tell you what I would choose but your choices or even needs would be quite different

    At first glance:

    • Sensor size is good, Canon EOS M = 1.6x Crop Factor, Sony NEX's all = 1.6x Crop Factor. Next up the chain are the 'Full Frame' sensors so yes 1.6x is great, yes NOT the best but still you will get excellent performance out of both the Canon and Sony's choice of sensors. This is where 'Nikon' misjudged the market with their smaller sensor! Well I was certainly disappointed as my LENS investment would have to be 'Nikor'
    • As for Lens choices: Both allow the use of an adapter, EOS M owners access to Canon's huge lens range and Sony sells an adapter (A-Mount) that allow the use of Minolta Lenses
    • The battery the Canon uses is most interesting: "The EOS M uses a new battery, the 7.2V 825mAH LP-E12. It provides 230 shots per charge according to the CIPA standard" So WHAT does that battery specification tell you or more to the point what does it mean for the DIY guys!?!
    • Also the idea of a 'Touch' Screen looks good, if the touch works or works as well as the touch screen on my iPod then I'm in for some touchy feely
    • Another feature that would swing the Canon my way is it's Eye-Fi WiFi which I presume is built in. As you know I have just setup my D90 with Eye-Fi and it was instant love, love at first sight ...
Those are just a few points that interest, however it tells me it's a difficult choice however you look at it ... BUT for myself personally it would be dead easy to choose, I would choose based on available lenses or lens options. For me it's a NO brainier, Canon vs Sony's OWN or Minolta? I know I would choose 'Canon' lenses! I'd have to say it's NOT looking GOOD for Sony ... hehe but could also be some emotional baggage muddying the water when I look at 'Sony' in general , maybe I'm a little biased, LOL not much just a little

LMAO, and don't EVEN get me taking about the aesthetics and/or ergonomics ...
    • Although one issue been discovered with the NEX's ... It's 'ON Button' is too easily activated ... Many have complained having found their Sony's accidentally turned ON inside their camera bags shooting video of the 'BLACK'. And 'Sony' are notorious for IGNORING design flaws within their hardware, software and even their firmware! So good luck with that, however I do know of a DIY fix to the issue ;)

    My first impression

Thank you w00d.  I was thinking the Canon might possibly be a better choice also, Canon lenses being a nice feature.  There is one area that I am still unclear and that is the video capabilities.  I think the Sony Nex-5 can only do 1080i, not 1080p.  For 1080p I think you need to step up to the Sony Nex-7 which costs a lot more, almost double.  So far I have not seen what the Canon EOS M can do video wise.

Also, since you mentioned battery, 250 shots seems like a very small number to me.  How does that affect video recording length?  Can it do 30 minutes, an hour?

    Video
    Format
        MPEG-4
        H.264
    Resolutions  1920 x 1080 (30, 25, 24 fps),
                        1280 x 720 (60, 50 fps),
                        640 x 480 (60, 50 fps)

Don't know and can't find if 1080i or 1080p [IMG]

LOL, what I'm implying about the battery given the Canon battery is rated at 7.2V 825mAH ... Does that look familiar, I'm currently flying 5 of them in my GAUI's and the size of the Canon's casing seems to match ... So as a DIY type I'm thinking Canons Proprietary Battery or the much cheaper 2S - 7.2v - 825mAH LiPo ... Looks like they both use the same CELL's. LOL just an observation and NOT a recommendation .... hehe

EDIT: Sorry I forget by distraction...

Seems LOW to me also, comparing to my D90 though it might be an optimistic projection ...

... My D90 eats battery's and even more so since I've added WiFi as the Eye-Fi Card gets it's power from the D90. Also I use 'Live View' just about ALL the time which is another natural battery killer. This is where my 'Finder' can come into it's own, by using my 'Eye Piece' ALL the POWER can GO toward taking more pics. In short NO Live View the more Photo's we can shoot! But if your flying your camera, Live View is not needed anyway eh ...

It's recommended we take at the least one other battery or set of batteries when out in the world. Modern digital camera's are by their very nature battery killers

From a review an example of battery drain while videoing w/ a D90, quote "shooting a total of about  20 minutes of video with VR on all the time was enough to cause the battery indicator to show red. My suggestion is to have several extra batteries along if you plan on shooting video with this camera"

Either way it's ALL 'relative' to what we do or want to do ... Meh, good question ... Might even be simpler to say "I don't know" ?
