DRONES: SAYING GOODBYE TO “THE RIGHT STUFF”?

Navy officials recently announced that an experimental drone that could change the future of naval aviation has survived its first round of testing aboard an aircraft carrier.

The X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System recently went through a series of mechanical and engineering tests designed to evaluate its compatibility with the Navy’s aircraft carriers during a two-week stint aboard the nuclear powered USS Harry S. Truman.

Navy flight engineers predict that similar aircraft could eventually be used to deliver cargo to ships at sea, carry out airstrikes and conduct surveillance.

In the not too distant future, we could be bidding a fond farewell to those intrepid, swaggering, carrier-based fighter pilots with the “right stuff.” They’ll be relegated to camping out below decks, operating remote drone control panels comparable to video game consoles.

The ultimate macho flyboys of yore, those aviators zooming through the bright blue yonder in their $55 million FA-18 Super Hornet fighter-bombers, may soon be flying a desk down in the bowels of the ship.
