Good video about the NAZA multirotor controller.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18ktd9ABscE

Also between 1:00 and 1:10 is the first FPV of a working excavator I have seen, very nice 120 in action among the sun and snow  8)

The Roswell Flight Test Crew out of Portland, OR has upgraded to the Naza as their control system. Another good un-boxing and flight test video by them. If you have not seen their other videos check em out, impressive things these guys do:

The Roswell Test Flight Crew have some nice videos.  They have some great video editing skills.  Their "test pattern" is awesome!

Here is a link to the complete build and calibration of a NAZA system.

I think I'm going to order one of these controllers.  It really looks interesting.

Cool, I want to learn more about these. I really think at this point they could be used on a variable pitch Quad. I can't see any reason why they wouldn't work? Unless I am wrong I see the throttle channel as just another channel that outputs servo signals to the ESC's. If we plugged them in servos that operated in the correct mechanical direction for adding pitch when it added throttle it should work. I figure you could set it up so there is zero pitch when the throttle was all the way down which would simulate the motors being off. For the real throttle you could pick an un-used channel (like the heli tail gyro gain/gear channel) and have that run one big motor at constant RPM and either be ON/OFF at the flip of a toggle. ESC soft start would handle the smooth spool up up the flip of a toggle. This NAZA may not have provisions for negative pitch/upside down/flipping type of flying, but I am not worried about that. Just want a collective pitch/single motor quad at this point.

So really as I see it if you were hovering and some wind started to tip it to the left then the left side would get some more "throttle" which would end up being more pitch thus lifting that side up again. I almost see the control of these things as the same as CCPM, you have two things going on at once.

    1. is the basic hovering RPM needed to sit there at a given weight.
    2. addition/subtraction from that starting RPM (hovering) to induce forward flight.

For design I am thinking a central gear box that has drive shafts going out to right angle gear boxes like torque tube helis, but much stronger and more precise than the one we saw crash in the video. Probably aluminum gears?

Maybe he just has a different landing technique?

I found another FPV video of Excavators in action and filmed with the help of DJI, but Wookong M this time. A very nice looking Komatsu (My favorite brand of excavator) at the beginning, then some others as well. Was having a hard time to get this video to play without buffering a lot.

Vimeo is lame.  I don't understand why people use it over YouTube.

Anyway, since you like Excavators and such I thought you might like this:

Ha, thanks, but this tower climbing excavator video has been heavily watched/shared/discussed in the equipment world since it came out. Those that are in the know realize what would happen if only one rubber hose burst while up there......

I know it's a old video, should have guessed you've seen it.  But impressive just the same if not at least for the driver's skills.
At one point in the video the announcer is standing directly under the Excavator.  I wouldn't have done that.

I have to say after flying both the GU-344 and the Naza there is no comparison.  I can imaging that the Naza will be the reference product that all other controllers will be measured against.  It is that good.
