Contour Camera Survives Avalanche and Two Years in the Wild

I thought this was a interesting story because it is the same camera I use. Note that the camera wasn't in a separate housing like most GoPro users use.

Lee went skiing on April 4, 2010 in the deep B.C. backcountry. He had on his ContourHD 1080p camera and goggle strap mount. During the descent Lee was caught in a big avalanche and fell over 600 feet, including a 50 foot cliff. Lee was buried, but survived. His Contour was lost in the avalanche…

This fall, his friends were hiking in the area. They saw a pair of goggles, picked them up and saw the camera still attached. They (amazingly) recognized the goggles and camera as Lee’s. They brought them back to him. Out of curiosity he plugged the camera in. It still charged. The back door was gone, but the memory card was intact, and it was full of the footage from the avalanche.

2.5 years later, the little Contour still powers on, still works. It didn’t have a waterproof case. It sat idle for 2 and a half winters of snow, rain, and snowmelt.

Lee cut together a little video of the day, the avalanche footage is real and scary.

He is blown away by the durability of the camera and said he’ll never doubt a Contour product again.
