I've seen some off road trucks that talk about a two speed transmission.  Are these only for nitro/gas vehicles?  How do they work?  Does a servo move a gear lever?

There are a lot of different kinds of 2 and 3 speeds in both nitro and electric. A lot of the nitro ones will use a centrifugally shifted 2 speed. It works a lot like the clutch and shoes found on a nitro. Most all the centrifugal ones are made to shift at speed at a pre set rpm and can shift on the fly. Then there are some mechanically activated ones that use a servo to actuate the shift. They basically move one set of gears in and out for another. The tranny on the summit is a mechanical 2 speed while the one on the tmaxx is a centrifugal unit. Tamiya has a mechanical 3 speed they have used for years also. Probably my favorite multi speed tranny ever

Thanks for the answer highlandcrawler.  My girl has a summit and I know that one has a servo, I have not had it apart (yet) because she hasn't broke it yet  ;).

I saw some 2 speed transmission on a online store and couldn't figure out how it worked because it didn't have a servo.  Now it makes sense what you said about working like a nitro/gas clutch.

Im gonna go out on a limb and say you will never see inside it ;) They are tough! Ive only seen 1 broken gear in a summit tranny and it was hauling a 13lb scale truck behind it. I flogged the piss out of the ones I've had shifting it at full speed and being super abusive to them. I would use them in more builds if it wasn't for their large size and weight up high. Me and a buddy are working on a 4 speed that is both mechanically and centrifugal shifted. we have been playing with it for years now and might actually have a prototype unit by the end of the year ???.

My girl doesn't haul anything, but I can see her shifting it at high speed...by accident.  She is always changing the switches on her transmitter unknowingly while driving.

You are making your own four speed?  Will it be for electric or nitro/gas vehicles?  For speed or for crawling, or both?

I have torn my summit/revo trannies up so many times it borderlines on ridiculous.  As soon as you poor power to them they go bang.  Then you buy the HG ti gears for them and the case splits next.  I will agree though that the 40 year old tamiya trans from the hilux is a masterpiece

    I installed a 2-speed tranny on my Hyper 7 and it's awesome!

You have a Hyper 7?  I have a brand new roller I was going to convert to electric that I might sell so I can get a RC8e instead.

If you want a decent opinion, I would stay away from AE, they are good rigs but mostly for smooth tracks, I would look into either Losi or Mugen for a much better all around rig.

I do kind of like the Losi 8ight.  What about Serpent or XRay?  Don't see those very often here.

You don't see them very often because they aren't really all that good.

I've never seen one in person (XRay or Serpent), but their engineering looks good.
