OK, so most of you know I build full-scale aluminum boats for a living. I had a meeting with my boss today and got the OK to start designing and building 1/4 scale versions of three of our power boats - The Destroyer, The Wildcat, and our flagship AL24 Wakeboard Boat! I will of course start with the AL24 :D
In this new project I will also design 1/4 scale versions of several other boats I have built and designed in full scale. Offshore racers, Sprint racers, and my personal favorite the tunnel hull.

This will be a lengthy process as you all know I work from 50-80 hours each and every week so be patient with me as I get the ball rolling. In the mean time, if anyone has any questions, suggestions, or maybe just want more info, please let the posts roll!

Suggestions for powerplants and drive units will be greatly anticipated ;) Keep in mind these will be 1/4 scale and I really don't see electric drive as an option.

    THANKS!!!

I have seen some really cool multi cy two strokes on you tube 10+ hp quick draw is one of them like 50cc or how about a old sled engine like a 340 rotax may be to big or maybe not 1/4 scale what does that come out to in inches

Spoke with one of our engineers today. He is onboard to shrink down the three boats to 1/4 their original size. I can then run them through our CNC punch or CNC plasma tables to produce accurate 1/4 scale lake screamers!!!
On the subject of engines, I was thinking between 50 and 65cc would do the trick but hadn't seen anything in the 10hp range! I've got to try to find that!

Thought I found the perfect engine. A 52cc twin maring engine with built-in CDI. But the specs say it is rated @ 2.6kw. That's just under 3.5hp! Nope, that won't do

hi guys, after a lot of experience with the hobby king jet, I will say stay away from it. try the Jettec unit instead, they have far more to offer and are far more powerful, and you do not need 10 hp to get them going, 6-7 hp is plenty.
If you wanted to build a smaller hull say around the 700mm long mark and would like to go electric, I make 30mm long jet units, heres a video of them:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sR4ht...ature=youtu.be
and a link to my hulls:
    http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com...1-6-scale-Jetsprint-boats-and-30mm-Jet-drives
I would like to see a alloy jetsprint hull, just don't have the time nor the welding experience to build them.
    regards mick

Hi mickieb49, Welcome to the forums!

I went to look at your YouTube video but I get a "This video does not exist" message. The second link to the photos is on another forum that requires a login to view them so can you post the photos here for us?

Hey mickieb49! Thanks for the input. Give me a price with shipping to 97503 (White City, OR) for one of your 30mm jet units. I don't really have any interest in building 700mm size boats as everybody and their brother already have the market flooded, but I would be interested in trying your jet on some of the hulls I already have.
That Jettec unit http://www.jettec.co.nz/#/shop/4563486095/Jet-unit-from-Jettec/2208552 looks great. Even has a place diverter built in - NICE! As for 6-7hp being enough... hahahaha, clearly we haven't met ;)
And yes, welcome to the forums! Glad to have someone else with boat experience onboard. What are your reservations against HK's jet unit - other than the obvious "it's Chinese"?
Oh, and where are you located?

Hi guys here is some pictures of my units, for the video, I may be easier ( scene my links don't work here) go to Youtube and Type in " Mickiebeez" Postage of my unit is $24 AUD , while the unit is $125 AUD
As for the Hobby king units, they are prone to the materials in the impeller being soft, the rear flow straightener not secured in properly and there is not enough material to secure it properly. The rear bearing is a plain brass bush, this is difficult to keep lubricant in it, as such is also prone to seizing , grabbing the flow straightener then destroying it'self.
There is a thread over at the rc jet boat forum about all the modifications that is required to get this unit to work, and in the end I am pretty sure the unit failed in the end anyway.
Really all there is left is the MHZ unit, as Graupner are no longer producing the units anymore, and the Jettec / Swashdrive unit.
I have had Swashdrives, Jettecs and both are awesome units and are streaks ahead of anything else out there.
The Mhz is well made, but is prone to un priming issues, and cavitation.
I have been playing around with Jetboats for near on 13 years now, and it is only now have I had the chance to release my own 30mm units, and hopefully later on a 53mm one.
    Regards Mick

I have a couple of questions for ya I watched all the YouTube vids I could find and only really saw on problem all the boats seem to porpoise ya know the bow bounces ever so slightly all the time I've never encountered that on a jet boat on a prop boat you ave to angle the prop out away from the transom more is there a way to trim it out on your pump what is your pump made of and what is the impeller made of how many blades are on the impeller does it have reverse

    Hi,
I have rectified the porposing, :

Machining out another plug this morning.
As for the pump, they are injection molded ABS, and the impeller is a 3 Blade Alloy, CNC'd for me. The unit also has trim so you can trim out most boats.
Rather than hijack this thread I will start a different one.

That's much better how did you fix it
I'm really digging the pump i want to ask the dimensions but it seams everybody post them in mm I'm just a old redneck I would like them in inches if that's doable not really asking the impeller or nozzle size more over all length x width xhight also if I were to order a pump today how long till it's in my mail box I will take a guess on that

    hats

Hey g8r, I have given consideration to scale v8 engines. Only two reservations. Their actual HP output is rather poor. And, well, they're DAMNED expensive! But oh, the cool factor!!!

OK, so the design for the scale AL24 is getting close to being ready. I have been scouring the net for parts and pieces. I'm pretty set on the Zenoah 61 Twin for power and I'll gather an assortment of props for initial testing. What I am needing help with is selecting a radio system.
    Minimum requirements are:
    4-Channel
Telemetry built in to include - speed, RPM, Temp, Voltage/Battery Level
QUALITY! - Not really looking at Chinese offerings at this point ;) Though if there is something out there that would be a contender I am open to considering it!

Ideally I would like 6 channels as I will be adding electric start, lights, and possibly sound! Hey, we put $10,000+ into stereo in the full scale, I can hardly do my smaller racer justice without music!!!

Price isn't going to be the deciding factor. Features and quality will be! Oh, and I should mention I'm mainly looking for a pistol grip radio :)

    Thanks for your input!!!!!

Also have our paint department lined up designing a killer paint scheme and our upholstery department designing an interior to match! Yep, that's right - actual foam-padded, stitched-seam seats!

Anyone know where I can find some 1/4 scale Barbies to fill the interior??o_O

These are the last three I've built out on a photo shoot before heading to the boat shows in Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Utah.
