Machined Part Request

It looks like the small one is only 640x480? The big one can do wireless HD streaming which could be really useful.

 

I like them for the format, it is a excellent design, and the video quality.  Plus they have the 37 mm lens adapter available as a option.

 

Interesting how the text on the page is reflected in the mirror finish of the part.  I'm going to hate to see this crash.  :

Was that done on a Bridgeport?

 

PP - Yes it was done mostly on the Bridgeport.  I did use the CNC (manually) with a giant CAT40 insert cutter to remove a lot of the excess metal.  Got that massive piece of channel at a boat shop on M street yesterday after trying all the other sources for structural angle locally.  Nobody had anything big enough.  What I wanted was something structural with that radius in the bend and I didn't want to have to make it from a giant block of metal.  In the end, I'm not sure that wouldn't have been easier to start with a block or just driven over to White City Metals.  By the time it was done, this took about six hours plus a couple more running around town trying to find something decent to start with.  I know the time sounds crazy, but I knew it was going to end up that way when this posting started.  Just figuring out exactly what I was making from napkins and phone calls sucked up a lot of time.  Starting with a better piece of metal would have helped the fab a lot.  This beast of a channel was about 3/8" thick to start with so most of it had to be turned into chips.  The only thing it had going for it was that radius I wanted.  Oh well!  I'm pretty sure I was having fun.

6 hours seems really fast for a one off part, I know how long things take. But I think I might agree sometimes starting with a blank is actually sometimes easier, but then the clean up when milling wet is not fun either, at least on mine anyway.

 

Hard to say about starting with a blank, but I know starting with a drawing would be really nice.  ;D  Came out good in the end, which is all that matters.  I'm looking forward to seeing everything mounted on the quad and working.

Here is what it looks like now. I am waiting on a spacer that will mount what you see in the photos to the undercarriage of the DJI F550. I plan to mount the spacer to a plate and vibration dampen the plate from the F550 frame.





The servos are Futaba BLS156HV brushless units.

 

Very nice John.  Looks like it would be pretty rigid.  Now does it feel in your hands?  Does it seem to turn on the center line of the camera?  Be sure to bring it Sunday for all to see.

It feels great and it is very rigid.  In the beginning I was concerned because the tilt is supported on only one side but the large inside diameter bearing seems to eliminate and flex, plus it takes the weight off the servo's bearings.

I think it turns on the center line of the camera, but I don't like turning the servos manually so the real test will be with power applied.

 

John - So what ever happened on your camera mount?  Did you get it working?  Hoped you'd bring it to Redwood.  How about posting some pics of the finished unit?

I'm almost done, I did receive the remaining standoff parts I ordered.  I am hung up on the mounting plate.

No not at all.  That other post was a general question because some of the on-road touring cars and drift cars have carbon fiber chassis.  I really like the carbon fiber chassis, but we don't have any real prepared surface race tracks or carpet tracks for several hundred miles and racing carbon fiber chassis on parking lots is pretty rough.  I was wondering what would be involved replicating them in aluminum.

I did a couple quick flights tonight and the gimbal is working really well. I don't have it fitting inside my Snapware like I wanted yet and it may just hang too low to make that work unless I get a larger Snapware.

The rubber vibration element should look familiar to Chris and Tiger since I saw it on the E-Flite 350 QX. It is part number E-Flite (Horizon Hobby) BLH7816, $15.00.

This vibration dampener is made to carry a GoPro only and so I am over that weight because it is supporting my whole gimbal and so I am getting some resonance but there are some stiffer rubber dampeners and if they are roughy the same mounting point diameter I think that should solve that. The other solution would be to add a couple more of the same dampeners going from 4 dampeners to 6 or 8.

No I mean video shot from this since you got it installed.

 

I will take some tomorrow. I had to figure out a take off and landing method because this thing hangs on the bottom and without the Snapware I don't have landing gear. You know what I did? I took off and landed in a milk crate making sure the camera was centered and the arms were over the sides. I don't know if I want to do that all the time since it is kind of tricky.
