Just ordered my first float plane - a PBY Catalina from NitroPlanes.com http://www.nitroplanes.com/60a-d8943-catalina-arf.html Anyone else out there flying something similar?
Actually, there are two videos on the product page at NitroPlanes.com. The second video shows take-off, touch-and-go, and landing on a grass field. Very versitile plane! I got it because my club does an annual float-fly event at Lake Selmac that's just too much fun to miss again. Will post pics and review when I get it assembled and test-flown. Stay tuned... ;D Here's a stock pic from NitroPlanes.com website.
That is nice. I thought those pods on the wings would break off. I suppose this is not a beginner plane either.
Looks to be pretty stable in the videos. Flies slow enough for easy flight. Should be a nice park flyer, plus the added bonus of water take-offs and landings
I have no flying experience but i would like to try it someday.i think i like the float planes, would a plane like that be a wise choice for a beginner like myself?
By all accounts, this PBY appears to be a slow, easy flyer. However, with dual motors and a large wingspan, I would hesitate to recommend it as a first plane for anyone. Most anyone you'll ask, myself included, would recommend the HobbyZone Super Cub LP RTF as the perfect first plane. http://secure.hobbyzone.com/catalog/HZ/index/index_park_flyers_rtf/HBZ7300.html It really is the hardest plane EVER to crash. Very well suited for easy hop-ups/upgrades (I have done so with mine and LOVE it!!!) As GPS stated in an earlier post, the wing floats on the PBY look pretty easy to break off in a less-than-perfect landing. Best to get a good feel for flight and learn the basics, then add to your hanger (of all the pilots I know, NONE has less than four aircraft!) You will get hooked! If you're available Sunday morning, the RVF are having a Fun-Fly at their Sky Park in Kerby, come out and join us if you can (see the events calendar for details). In any event, hope you join the air RC world - it really is great!
I've learned, as I'm sure most pilots have, the HARD way Many crashes and lots of hours glueing parts back together! But that's just as enjoyable really. I started with electric EPO foam planes because they were cheap and EASY to repair. Most of my fellow club members go with gas/nitro wood models, but I really don't have that much patience!!!
Well, after nearly a month, and a half dozen unanswered emails, I have yet to recieve my PBY so I cancelled my order and bought a set of floats for my Cub (see the new thread - Water Cub!)
Not sure what the issue was. Never had a problem with NitroPlanes before. If I ever do get an answer from them I may still get the PBY just because it looks so great and is very inexpensive for the performance it delivers
