I have been toying around with my blade nano qx and have desperately been wanting to move on to something a little more fun with potential to possibly do some fpv racing after a fair amount of practice. I have been looking at this kit on hobbyking.

Any thoughts? I want something inexpensive and reliable that I can really beat up and learn on. Any advice?
I was also wondering if anyone around here in the rogue valley races fpv multirotors? I would love to come and check it out sometime.

Hello Michael! Great to find someone else interested in racing the little quads. I have never seen that HK quad before, but it looks pretty nice. The price is certainly right! The motors are a little small (1704), but maybe that would be a place to get started. You can always upgrade those later. Most all of us are running 22xx motors and those that have tried 18xx motors have already upgraded. This 17xx is going to be a little wimpy with fpv gear on the frame. It will probably fly fine before you load it down so it could be a place to start. The ESC's on that are SimonK and the same ones I'm using on mine. They work great. You'll need a flight controller and I'd suggest the NAZE32 or CC3D. The KK2 they mentioned would be a little easier to setup, but I don't think would fly as well as the other two I mentioned. For a battery, you'll probably end up with is the Turnegy NanoTech 1500mah. They suggest 1000mah. That's probably because of the little motors. I didn't look, but if they sell that frame alone, maybe you would be better off getting the frame and larger motors to start with.

Pretty much all the guys that fly quads Sunday mornings at Redwood School on Leonard Rd are into the 250 fpv racing quads now. Please do join us some Sunday morning. Most of the group also goes to Tacos Locos for lunch aster flying so I hope you can join us for that to. It's a good way to get to know everyone.

Thanks Tiger, what time do you all meet on Sunday? I've been flying for a pretty short period of time, but I know that FPV flight is my end goal. I want to put something together that I can practice on before loading it up with FPV gear. I know I am going to crash a lot, so I would rather not lose the multirotor and the camera all in my first crash. I am pretty good with flying with auto level features, but I know I need to be solid on full manual control. Any tips from a veteran pilot?
    Thanks

Hi Michael - The group meets at Redwood School (3163 Leonard Road, Grants Pass) from around 8:00AM to 12:00-1:00 depending on weather. Lately, it's been pretty cold so not so many guys brave it. If anyone is there, it will be the fpv guys. :) If you're going to come, I'd say come between 10:30 and 11:00 right now. I usually get there a little late, because I have church in the morning. I'm always there by noon and I always go to lunch with the guys. Hope you can join us.

As for flying in full manual mode, you won't want to do that for fpv. We all pretty much fly with the autolevel on. Full manual is more control that you'll want looking through a pipe (lens). When you come, you can check out what everyone else is using and be able to ask any quesitions you want. Super nice group so just walk right up and make yourself known. BTW... In the summer, it's a much bigger group with lots of planes and helicopters as well. Only the brave come out in the cold. :) Let me know if you're coming and I'll keep an eye out for you.

Thanks Tiger - I will have to come and check things out sometime in the next couple of weeks. This has been an itch I have been needing to scratch for some time now.
